Ex-Oriente Film Workshop


Ex Oriente Film is a year-long professional training programme for East European directors and producers, which supports financing of creative documentary films. The filmmakers and producers will receive help of experienced European producers, trainers, AV experts and TV commissioning editors in the development of their projects, finding financing and foreign partners, and will get advise from them on the further steps to take towards realizing their creative films. Besides practical content and individual tutoring, the workshop will include lectures on the basics of the European audiovisual market (legal and economic aspects) and how independent production companies work in recent Europe.


1st workshop: The Way of Co-Production
Venue: Wien, Austria
When: April 8 - 13, 2008
The first workshop focuses on the preparation and development of a documentary project for documentary co-production.

Participants: directors and producers of the project.


2nd workshop: Production Development
Venue: Písek, Czech Republic
When: June 11 - 15, 2008
The workshop is aimed at establishing and development of production companies in Eastern Europe. Participants: producers and directors of the project. Follow up of project development.


3rd workshop: Market Opens
Venue: Jihlava IDFF, Czech Republic
When: October 22 - 27, 2008
The workshop is dedicated to marketing and promotion of films, pitching techniques and opportunities and the potential of East European independent producers in the European market. The third session ends with public presentations of the projects at the East European Forum.

East-European Forum

The East European Forum is the region's largest meeting of East European documentary filmmakers with leading European commissioning editors, distributors, buyers and film fund representatives. Directors and independent producers offer their projects for co-production, presale or any other form of financial support. The foundation of the Forum created an alternative in Central Europe to the previous practice which relied on funding provided by the state or by local broadcasters. During its existence, the Forum has become a prestigious meeting place that has, since 2001, hosted 420 East European filmmakers and producers, 59 TV representatives and dozens of international distributors, buyers and festival programmers. Support for East European documentary films in the initial development stage, an overview of funding options for documentary projects, an outline of different paths available for films both prior and after completion. Creative workshops, meetings between 50 East European documentary filmmakers and representatives of European broadcasters, film funds, distributors and festival programmers, as well as some 45 documentary films made with the direct support of the Forum.
